Focus: habits, exploration, and awareness

Focus on academics and athletics
Explore leadership and service opportunities
Develop strong habits in academics, organization, and time management
Explore different military branch cultures and career opportunities
Create a resume to track academic, leadership, athletic, and military-related activities
Review medical standards early

Are there potential issues that could affect eligibility later?

SOPHOMORE YEAR --
Start Preparing
Focus: direction, consistency, and early planning

Advance into leadership roles
Research Service Academies, ROTC programs, and Senior Military Colleges
Read books related to military branches and career fields of interest
Explore military summer camps and training programs. Plan ahead and prepare to apply
Take mock standardized test assessments. Determine which test fits you best and plan to study over the summer

JUNIOR YEAR — Application Kickoff
Focus: execution, strategy, and options

Research and create balanced college lists, including:
- ROTC programs
- Senior Military Colleges (Never rely on Academies alone. Take standardized tests and finalize a testing plan
Continue developing as a leader
Ensure your resume is updated
Learn about and begin preparing for fitness exams
Apply to military summer camps and programs
Plan Service Academy campus visits
Springtime: Request teacher and other letters of recommendation
Open Service Academy and ROTC application portals
Begin the Congressional nomination process (research requirements and deadlines early)

SENIOR YEAR — Apply & Compete
Focus: completion, patience, and decision-making

Complete Service Academy and ROTC applications
Apply to civilian colleges (and SMCs)
Complete medical and fitness exams (DoDMERB/DMACS)
Navigate ROTC scholarship boards
Prepare for military interviews (ROTC Scholarships, Nominations, Academies)
Stay in contact with your military colleges/ROTC /units
Final campus visits
Manage outcomes:
- Appointments
- Scholarships
- Waitlists or qualified-pending status
Evaluate offers and confirm the best commissioning path

The Goal
Commission as a U.S. Military Officer
There are multiple paths to serve, and success comes from early planning, flexibility, and informed decisions. For some, that will mean attending a military service academy. Many will join ROTC programs (with or without a scholarship) at a civilian college. Lastly, some will enroll in a senior military college, which is closer to a service academy environment than an ROTC program, to begin their commissioning journey.

Military officer admissions are not a senior-year only process. Families who understand the timeline early are best positioned to make confident, competitive choices. Naval and Marine ROTC vs. the Naval Academy: Which Path Is Right for You?

When students tell me they want to attend the Naval Academy, my first question is always: Why?
I also ask about their alternate plans, since the Academy is highly selective. Many families aren’t familiar with Naval and Marine ROTC—or may not realize it offers a fantastic pathway to becoming an officer.

What Is Naval ROTC and the Marine Corps Option?

The Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) is a leadership program offered at 66 host colleges, with additional access via crosstown schools. Midshipmen are full-time students who train part-time during the academic year and on summer cruises. ROTC has the same end goal: to commission as Naval ensigns or Marine Corps second lieutenants upon graduation.
Marine-option candidates train within the Naval ROTC battalion. After freshman year, academic courses and military training paths diverge.
